The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland was granted a Charter on 11th February 1784. This Charter gave the College the power to control the practice of surgery and to make provision for surgical education.

Prior to that time the surgeons were grouped with the barbers and the Barbers Surgeons Guild. The founders had no premises so the earliest meeting was held in the boardroom of the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin . The College flourished from the very start and in 1810 moved to its present location at the corner of York Street facing St Stephen's Green

Accessed through Goat Castle on Castle Street, Dalkey, this castle is one of seven original towerhouses of Dalkey which dates from 1429. At that time, Dalkey acted as the main port for Dublin. You can view the Murder Hole, Machicolation and other medieval features. The Victorian interventions on the Towerhouse are an interesting feature. From the battlements there is a splendid view of the surrounding town, sea and mountains.

Kilruddery House

Home to the Brabazon Family (the Earls of Meath) since 1618 Killruddery House is the most successful Elizabethan-Revival mansion in Ireland and also one of the earliest. In the 1820s the 10th Earl engaged the fashionable architects of the day - Richard Morrison and his son William - to remodel Killruddery. In the 1950s the house was greatly reduced to its present day proportions, but much of the Morrisons' design and architecture still remain. Killruddery is unique in having the most extensive early formal gardens, still in their original style, surviving in Ireland, largely laid out in the 17th century and added to in the 19th century. The gardens at Killruddery are the oldest in Ireland and are amongst the most important of their type.
