was Sir John Betjeman who wrote that in

take them on. This short break to
the romantic river valleys of the South East will give you a little taste of
some of the historic stately homes, the gothic ruins and the glorious gardens
that are
Ireland
's heritage.
Day
1
Fly
into
Dublin
Airport
and pick up your self drive car.
Your destination tonight is
Ireland
's medieval capital, Kilkenny, on the River Nore.
Travel around
Dublin
and consider a visit to Castletown House, the finest Palladian mansion in
Ireland
. Take the road Southwards by
way of Moone High Cross, the Quaker Village of Ballitore, the gothick towers of
Duckett's Grove to Kilkenny to explore its medieval streets, craft workers’
studios, antique shops, medieval houses, castle and cathedral.
Spend the night overlooking the Nore near Thomastown where you will stay
in Georgian grandeur, either in the 4*

, or Ballyduff House.

2
By
way of the Cistercian abbey at Jerpoint to the ruined shell of Woodstock House
surrounded by its beautiful gardens above the
village
of
Inistioge
. On to New Ross to see The Ros
Tapestry and consider lunching in the tea rooms at
Kilmokea
Gardens
. In the afternoon visit Tintern
Abbey and Johnstown Castle and overnight in the eccentric and stately Woodbrook
House, near Bunclody or the Millrace Hotel.
As you travel through the villages there will be antique shops, craft
worker's studios and art galleries to explore.

3
By
way of
Altamont
Gardens
at Tullow, and the mysterious stone fort of Rathgall, to the Georgian
masterpiece of Russborough House, and then over the
Wicklow
Mountains
to Glendalough, with it early monastic ruins, and the great gardens of
Powerscourt House
Overnight
in the
village
of
Enniskerry
or in the Ritz Carlton. Nearby you
could enjoy an entertaining evening in a village inn.
