A beautiful and special place, steeped in more than two centuries of history and intrigue; it was home to the colourful Walton family for more than 200 years, followed by a tea planter from Ceylon, an eccentric Church of Ireland minister, and two retired Scottish priests. Years of neglect and hard times had seen the fabric and grounds of the main house, courtyards and walled garden become derelict, until the present owners, started the mammoth task of restoration and renovation in 1996. | Longueville House, Mallow TEL (022) 47156 B&B from 90 - 180 Severe portraits of past Irish Presidents won't put you off the delectable food and the super rooms in this stately 18th C.house, which is surrounded by swathes of rolling parkland, a vineyard and the Blackwater Valley. The O'Callaghans were one of the founder members of Ireland's Blue Book and have been providing the best food, hospitality (in the true sense of the word) and friendship to visitors to the Cork and Kerry areas (it is only an hour from Killarney) for over 40 years. If you come across a guide book that does not recommend Longueville, then it is not worth using. There are four new rooms on the side of the house designed for American guests - ie no creaks and more floor space. However I prefer a cosy room overlooking the clipped hedges of the garden, and wondering (if I hear creaks) about the residents of the room in past centuries |
