"A Mountain Clachan!"Tory Bush Cottages |

A group or "Clachan" of five traditional
cottages in a scenic location overlooking the Mountains of Mourne in County Down, Northern
Ireland.
Redmond O'Hanlon was an Irish Chieftain who lost his lands in the Williamite settlement of
1693. Rather than go into exile he became an outlaw, a Robin Hood figure, robbing from the
newly rich landlords and giving to the poor. One of his hide-outs (he had three in the
Mourne Mountains) was under the cover of some ancient thorn trees which grew in the field
in front of the cottages. The old Irish word for a rebel was tory so this hide-out became
known as Tory Bush. Redmond's spirit, in the form of a large black dog, haunts one of his
other hide-outs, seven miles away!
The cottages are all similar in design, most featuring a large sitting room with a high
ceiling and stone built open fire place, with full gas central heating. Each of the five
cottages has a master bedroom with en-suite shower room: all beds can be used as twin
singles or zipped to form a double. The cottages have a fully equipped kitchen with
microwave, dishwasher etc and each has colour T.V. and video and own-line telephone.
One cottage is designed for less mobile persons. 600 metres to Ulster way and access to
"High" Mournes, adjacent to Mountain Bicycle trails.
