Lisdoonvarna House, Co Clare
Set in its own gardens in the heart of the village and amongst the breathtaking scenery of the Burren, Lisdoonvarna House enjoys a perfect location. The original house dates from the 17th Century and is the oldest house in Lisdoonvarna, which is a noted spa town with wells offering sulphur scented water for the hardy!
When not being rented by the week the house is run as a small country inn, so it has all the efficiencies of a professionally run establishment, though it may perhaps lack some of the more quirky charm of house on which the patina of history sits more heavily. As you will see from the photographs, the bedrooms for instance are wonderfully spacious and comfortable, but not terribly personal.
.
Comfort is guaranteed….. crisp white linen, fluffy white towels, luxury toiletries. All rooms have television, telephone, hairdryer, CD music system and tea & coffee making facilities.
There is much to do in the Burren and the library is the perfect place for relaxing and planning your day - Cliffs of Moher, Ailwee Caves, the Atlantic Coastline, Lahinch Golf Course and Doolin are all within a short drive. Or just sit in the conservatory and watch the world go by.
Lisdoonvarna, on the edge of the Burren was developed as a spa by the Victorians, but is more famous today for its matchmaking and music festivals. The town has a number of brightly coloured buildings and traditional pubs.
The Burren is a vast limestone plateau of outstanding natural beauty. It's flora, archaeology, geology, legends and history make it unique in Europe.
On the coast of West Clare, are the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. They rise in places to over 700 feet and stretch for almost 8 km. O'Brien's Tower which was constructed in the early l9th century as a viewing point for Victorian tourists is located on Moher's highest cliffs.
Other local sites include Ailwee Cave, Cahermore Stone Fort and many ancient sites such as the Poulnabrone Dolmen and the Gleninsheen Wedge Tomb
Aran Islands (15 km)- in the middle of Galway Bay. The rugged, natural beauty along with thatch roofed stone cottages dot the islands. Throughout the islands, you will find ruins of early monasteries and fortifications, and many churches.
The Spectacle Bridge (3 km)- It spans a deep narrow gorge through which the Aille River flows. As it had to support the road at the top, a double arch forming a circular opening was built above the lower arch, giving the bridge its unusual and unique 'spectacle' appearance
Nearby are Lahinch's world-famous championship links course and the new Doonbeg golf links. There are long sandy beaches for surfing and sun bathing. A little further up the coast there is horse riding available on the empty sandy beaches. And there are lots of amusements for children of all ages from Harry Potter like castles to more traditional amusements.

About the town
Lisdoonvarna developed into a tourist centre as early as the mid 18th century when a top Limerick surgeon discovered the beneficial effects of its mineral waters. People travelled from near and far to bathe in and drink the mineral waters which are rich in iron, sulphur, magnesium and calcium and were said to provide relief for certain diseases. It was because of the popularity of these mineral springs and the huge amount of people coming here that led to the Lisdoonvarna “matchmaking tradition”. The tradition is still celebrated with a festival held in its honour throughout the month of September. As well as the healing sulphur and chalybeate springs, the Spa has a Victorian pump house, sauna, a massage room and mineral baths all in beautiful woodland surroundings.
The Burren Smokehouse Visitor Centre produces very fine oak smoked Atlantic salmon. One can learn the ancient tradition of cold smoking salmon and about the folklore of salmon.
