Ross is a wonderful and fascinating house, just outside Galway City and at the gateway into the wild mountains and moors of Connemara. In a very tranquil and private setting overlooking its own lake, it was originally an O'Flaherty Castle. The famous Martin family, whose members include Dick Martin, the founder of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the writer Violet Martin, the Ross in Somerville and Ross, left here in the early 20th Century. The house fell into a state of considerable ruin and has been superbly restored by the present owners who are American.
