One account of Castle Matrix
If any of you have read any of the Grail stories, such as Wolfram Von Eschenbach's Parzival, you'll know that Sir Gawain was constantly encountering noble ladies in peril. Usually what would happen is Gawain, in his errant wanderings, would come across the castle of the Lady in question, which would be either enchanted, under siege, or some other unfortunate circumstance. Gawain would then offer to be the Lady's champion, and proceed to defeat the besiegers in combat, or take whatever action was needed to dispell the enchantment, etc. I had quickly come to the conclusion that Liz O' Driscoll was a woman with a problem. I realized that one middle-aged woman, an old man (her father), and a boy in his early teens (her son) were too few people to take care of such a large estate with so many animals. I had observed them running ragged trying to cope with the guests, as well as deal with the mischief of numerous dogs, horses, sheep and cats.
Another We knew that the Castle Matrix near Rathkeale was to be our home for the visit, yet I was not prepared for the magic that lay ahead!. After arriving at the Castle I was overwhelmed with a combination of fear and excitement. Built in 1420 the Castle was living history! Today the castle is lived in by a lady named Liz O'Driscoll and her family. Her late husband Sean restored the castle to its present condition and filled it with the most wonderful artefacts from his travels. The atmosphere was very spiritual. On the Saturday evening we had a gathering at Castle Matrix where the Irish teachers entertained us: singing, live music and food by candle light- It is a memory that will stay with me forever!
Another That dream castle Id booked the next night, Castle Matrix, turned out to be a mess. Only those ready for hostel style living, not royal rooms, should stop. Cleaning is not the forte of the the lady of the house, and nor is gardening.
Another It is quite delightful, highly eccentric and might need a professional cleaning job done! Liz is an absolute sweetie and the castle has a magical atmosphere. The garden is straight out of Sleeping Beauty. The great hall is excellent and can seat 50 guests in baronial splendour. And after a night in the Disney-like trumpery of Dromoland we were delighted to find a real castle to stay in.
