The History of The Dean's Cottage & The Cathedral Cottage, London Street
Records show that there has been a house on this site from the mid-eighteenth century and possibly earlier. The property dates from 1767 when Henry Darcus Esq. acquired the lease from The Honourable The Irish Society. London Street, called after the city of London by the founders of the walled city, retains much of the charm and character of past centuries. There is a lovely view from the house of St. Columbs Cathedral and its grounds. St. Columbs is the oldest building within the walls and it lies at the heart of the historic city. Across the street from No. 16, there is a plaque to Sir Robert Montgomery who was born in London Street. He was one of the great colonial governors of the Punjab and grandfather of Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.
The houses have all the convenience of the twenty-first century. Despite many alterations over the years, these charming houses retain much of its former character and elegance. We feel that Mr. Darcus would have approved of this most recent restoration!
Heritage colours have been used in the rooms. Fine old pieces of furniture add to the ambiance. When I first visitied it I was quite captivated by both the lovely house and the unique setting.
Cathedral Cottage is close to the Verbal Arts Centre, the Millennium Forum Theatre & Conference Centre and two main shopping malls. There are restaurants, coffee shops and bars close by.
Cathedral Cottage the ideal base from which to explore nearby Donegal, (Donegal Town is one hours driving time and Sligo two hours away). The Giants Causeway and the Sperrin Mountains are an hour to an hour and a half drive. Buses to Belfast go hourly (ninety minutes journey time) and Derry Airport is fifteen minutes driving distance from the Cathedral Cottage.
We would give the house a 3* rating - neither primitive not super luxury! Amongst its many advantages are a charming setting, great character and lots to do, as well as clean, comfortable and newly refurbished accommodation.
