The house was originally owned by the Duke of Leinster, and was a Hunting Lodge. In "Emily, Duchess of Leinster 1731-1841", Brian Fitzgerald wrote: "The building works of Carton House were still unfinished when James, Lord of Kildare, brought his beautiful young bride to Ireland after their marriage. So they spent the first few weeks of their married life at Leinster Lodge near Athy, in County Kildare".
In 1792, Lord Edward Fitzgerald married Pamela, daughter of the Duke of Orleans, and returned to Ireland and lived in Leinster Lodge, which was given to him as a wedding present. The room in Leinster Lodge in which the United Irishmen used to meet is still there to be seen
