Headfort House Courtyard

Beautifully appointed Mews houses in a magnificent courtyard setting.
Headfort is acknowledged to be one of the finest estates in Ireland. The estate consists of Headfort House, Headfort Golf Club, exquisite gardens and the Courtyards. The heritage town of Kells, whose origins predate the 9th century and where the magnificent Book of Kells originated, is only one mile from the estate and has many charming pubs, restaurants, and shops. Once through the ornate gates, the main drive passes mature plantations of magnificent trees and gentle, open parkland to the original Georgian quadrangular farmstead built in 1759. The Main Courtyard, faces towards an 18th century parterre garden. The Lower Courtyard has a pair of mirror image buildings, each with twelve residences and private gardens, which overlook a formal reflecting pool framed with rows of semi mature lime trees. All the houses are soundproofed, and have underfloor and overhead heating systems, elegant cornices and some houses have antique pine ceiling beams, flooring in terracotta tiles, Portuguese limestone or French oak, open fireplaces, master bedrooms en-suite with power shower, ground floor guest bathroom, and fully equipped Neff kitchens. The Lower Courtyard has an airier and more elegant look with twelve beautifully crafted residences on either side of the reflecting pool. As in the Main Courtyard all the houses are fitted to the highest standards and also have a private garden. Headfort Golf Club designed by Christy O'Connor Jnr is one of the finest 18-hole parkland courses in the country and runs adjacent to the Main Courtyard.

History

Meath is known as 'The Royal County' because it contained the seat of the High Kings of Ireland on Tara Hill. Proof of human habitation has been discovered in Co. Meath which dates back 9,000 years. Artisans and craftsmen built spectacularly mysterious grand passage tombs at Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth. The High Cross of Kells and the striking calligraphy of the Book of Kells represent the most readily recognisable decorative artifacts of Celtic Christianity.

History of Headfort House  About a mile from the town of Kells is Headfort, the noble mansion of the Marquess of Headfort, beautifully situated in a well-planted demesne of more than 1200 statute acres, intersected by the river Blackwater, which within the grounds expands into a fine lake. Building commenced in 1757 taking fourteen years to complete, to the design of George Semple. The exterior is quite dominating, despite the influence of family friend, Lord Burlington who had completed 'The Grand Tour' and was impressed by the work of Andrea Palladio.  In fact from the outside the house is impressive, imposing but severe and dull.

The interior is a complete contrast.  Mostly  designed by Robert Adam of Edinburgh and it contains 100 breathtaking rooms. The Main Hall, Staircase and the Eating Parlour are the outstanding features and here Palladianism succeeded in taking effect. In more recent times Percy French (famous not just as an artist but also as the composer of songs) was a contributor to the House's decoration. The house is surrounded by various breathtaking gardens and parklands, which add in no small way to the attractiveness of the estate. The estate has gone through something of a transformation over the past few years and is now a prestigious international boarding school.
