The Gate Lodge sets the standard for self-catering in Ireland. The owner was an interior designer for many years and she has converted this Georgian cottage just the way she wants. The end result indulges the senses and yet despite the apparent luxury and attention to detail, it doesn't feel too oppressively perfect. Here, country house elegance meets cosy cottage. The elegant lodge lies hidden at the end of her drive, secluded by trees, and backs onto a small country lane with only the odd tractor to break the peace and quiet. The peace is further enhanced by a total absence of TV. The house is in a magical hinterland between Navan, Kells and Athboy.

You enter by the kitchen with hand-printed Brunschwig and Fils wallpaper, a Welsh dresser storing patterned Portmeirion china, red deal cupboards distressed to create a limewash effect and a hob but no oven. Left is the sitting room with books, paintings and a comfy cream sofa in front of an open fire. The sabre is purely for decoration. French doors open on to a terrace and a beautiful secret garden that leads to a small stream. The third room is a double bedroom with a 4' 6" bed, wooden cupboards, fresh white linen, coir matting and a pretty shower room. An electric blanket is provided and there is also a small desk with telephone, hairdryer, ample storage and good reading lights. Linen is provided, and a housekeeping service is available on request.  

If you can drag yourself away, there are lots of fabulous public gardens to visit, too.  There are pleasant country views from all the windows and French doors open on to a terrace and the lovely secret garden.   Short breaks of two or three days even during the week, subject to availability. Please note that the Lodge is not suitable for children or pets.
