Drenagh, A Stately Home
between The Sperrin Mountains & The Sea

Conolly Robert McCausland, whose ancestors have lived at Drenagh for hundreds
of years, wrote some notes for a group of dignitaries who visited Drenagh after
the war. He conjures up an image of the house and its surroundings which is as
meaningful now as it was half a century ago:
"To enter a house such as Drenagh is to go back in time to an age of
elegance rather than utility or to a period of stability and confidence rather
than to one of uncertainty and change.
Apart altogether from the things of interest which may be found inside it, and
which represent the contribution of succeeding generations, there is the
character of the house itself, and the setting in which it stands. Everything
would be seen to have its place and to be either planted or designed, in order
that it may give pleasure to the beholder, if he or she can give the time to
behold it. In the 18th Century 'time' was not a precious commodity.
Stand on the lawn under the Great Beech Tree from where you can see the angle of
the house as it appears in Lanyons drawings. Then go to the corner of the
terrace and notice the beautiful symmetry of the bow window reaching from the
ground to the roof, and note also the balustrade surrounding the roof and
corresponding with the terrace running the whole length of the lawn. Now
consider how the house is set within its frame of trees and parkland and how the
whole arrangement has been designed not to show off to but to advantage the
natural beauty of the countryside and its ring of hills surrounding the valley
of the Roe."
