COOCLOGHER HOUSE, KILLARNEYThe Finest House in Kerry |

The owners of this house, who worked in London for many years before returning to Ireland, have had enormous fun and spent a fortune turning a rambling country house into a smart and sophisticated home. It is a most impressive and beautiful Italianate house in a walled estate a short walk from the town of Killarney, dating from 1737. Everything in the house is of the first quality - superb beds and bedding, attractive antique furniture, superb kitchen equipment, efficient heating and plumbing. It is set in 60 acres of mature gardens and dramatic parkland with wonderful views. This is probably the best self-catering accommodation currently available in Killarney and a perfect base for visiting the area. For golfers it is brilliant, 5 minutes from Killarney Golf Course, and less than an hour to Tralee, Adare, Ballybunion and Waterville, with another 14 other less well known courses within a 40 mile radius.
The house, on the ground floor, includes a massive kitchen which was rebuilt and re-fitted year last year; it has all the equipment that one could desire in a kitchen that would be up to semi-professional standards. Off the wide, high ceilinged hall, which dates from the early Victorian refurbishment of the house and has elegant plasterwork, are the reception rooms, all with open fires to warm the spirit. There are two sitting rooms, a large dining room and the most unique feature of the house - a curvilinear glass house with the largest camellia in the Northern Europe, over 170 years old. The rooms all face South and West, looking towards the mountains. Guests will find stacks of books, maps, newspapers, fresh flowers and luxurious rugs to soothe their spirits. Upstairs there are four large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and king size beds that can be split to make twin beds. There are also two double bed rooms sharing a bathroom - all overlooking the garden. The bed linens are finest Egyptian Cotton and the mattresses super pocket sprung.

Within walking distance is the
bustle of Killarney, with its jaunting cars, shops, restaurants and colourful bars. And if
you want to explore beyond the parkland, there are acres of peaceful woodlands and the
National Park in the opposite direction. Though the owner does live in another wing of the
house, the apartment is completely private and guests will be unaware of their neighbour.
The house is not suitable for families with young children. We think that this is one of the best presented houses in the West. It could do with a little more clutter - but then I like clutter! Directions:- Leave Killarney on the Muckross Road. On the left hand side you will see The Tower B & B and then the car park for the Gleneagle Hotel. Between the car park and the hotel there is a small road. Follow this road and you will come to a high stone wall on the right hand side after about 1 km. Turn right through the impressive entrance and up the long avenue, through the parkland and meadows. The house will come into sight at the top of the hill. |
