CLOUGHAN CASTLE
CO GALWAY

The Irish CastleIn the rolling green hills near Galway in the West of Ireland lies Cloghan Castle, which has stood on these lands for over 800 years. Originally built as an out-post fortification in the 12th century, the castle was last inhabited by Hugh deBurgo in the 15th century, one of the most ancient and influential families in the Irish History, a son of Walter de Burgo, Earl of Ulster.

The Castle represents an outstanding example of full restoration and renovation of one of Ireland' major historical monuments of the Norman period. Throughout restoration meticulous attention was paid to every detail in order to ensure historical accuracy while at the same time all mod cons required to convert the property into a luxurious residence skillfully and unobtrusively incorporated. The property stands on a site of approximately 1 acre and the rooms in the higher floors command excellent views of the surrounding countryside.
A private avenue leads to a semicircular paved area and a tennis court which are outside the boundaries of the external fortification. The castle is fully spotlighted, enabling its grandeur to be illuminated by night.

The castle is constructed of natural stone from the area which is predominately granite, with most of the walls standing 6 ft in depth. Indeed much of the stone used for the restoration would have been used during the original construction of the castle. All the windows retain their traditional outline and design. The battlements have space for 300 people for large open air barbecues or private dining al fresco.

The internal construction of the castle is largely of exposed natural stone walls, wooded beamed ceiling and stone or wooden floors. A winding 90 steps stairway connects the various levels. Furthermore, in spite of the restriction of lighting imposed by the use of the traditional windows, the Castle is well lit by means of internal lighting systems

The Drawing Room is the ideal setting for morning coffee and newspapers, a leisurely novel or a casual conversation, while sharing afternoon tea or evening cocktails, or even for time to relax alone.

Dining will never be as memorable as a feast in the Great Banquet Hall. Here the unique medieval experience can be relished and the atmosphere of the castle truly comes back to life. This room brings beauty to the eye, but extends its advantages from banquet room to comfortably seating 120.

In the castle's spacious seven double bedrooms each with its own individual personality, relax in a grand manner and experience the serenity which nature provides.
