Castle Oliver, Co Limerick
Castle Oliver has undergone a multi million Euro refurbishment and is now available for receptions and luxurious holiday rentals
|
Castle Oliver is a sprawling gothic
mansion with 15 acres of beautiful grounds, surrounded by thousands of
acres of unspoilt Irish countryside. Set in the Ballyhoura Mountains, the
Castle is roughly halfway between Limerick and Cork. Both Shannon and Cork
airports are about an hour away.
The Castle was built in the 1840s by Elizabeth and Mary Oliver-Gascoigne, sisters who inherited vast wealth at a young age. Their monogrammed initials OG appear all over the building, both inside and out. In 1852 Elizabeth married and became Baroness Ashtown. She and her husband lived at Castle Oliver for much of the time. Artistic and musical, the sisters were actively involved in the design and decoration of the interiors. They made stained glass windows, many of them hand painted; one of which graces the wall of the grand staircase and back painted glass panels, one of which adorns the over mantel of the ballroom. The Castle covers about an acre, and has well over a hundred rooms. There are twelve staircases, five of them stone spirals. |
