The Boat House, Castlehill

From the main Crossmolina Road tiny lanes lead off towards piers and peninsulas jutting out into Lough Conn. One leads to an imposing gateway, beyond which a private avenue twists out of view, through a scene worthy of an 18th century pastoral landscape artist. These are the gates of Castlehill.
In the 1960s the Lough Conn
catchment area was extensively drained, with the result that the boat house at
Castlehill ended up 100 yards from the new shoreline and 10 feet above the
water. The Boat House, which dates from the early Victorian era, is in its own small garden at the heart of
this beautiful lakeside estate with woods, parkland and farmland. It has
recently been refurbished and offers comfortable accommodation. The style is very
informal - wooden floors, rugs, pine furniture. It is an
upstairs downstairs house, with the bedrooms downstairs where the water once
lapped and the living room
and kitchen upstairs with a delightful balcony. There is
private mooring for your lake boat 50 m away from the front door. The main house on the
estate is over 1km away, and in the morning you will hear nothing louder than
the dawn chorus.
