BALLYCURRIN LODGE, ON LOUGH CORRIB

Ballycurrin was built 10 years ago on the banks of Lough Corrib in a secluded and quiet location, but not remote,  25 minutes from Galway.  Its present owner, a Dublin based banker, bought this house after viewing dozens of houses around Lough Corrib's  300 km of lake shore on the grounds that it was the most comfortable with the best views.  We think that he was right!.  Over the last few months he has fully re-furbished the house with a new kitchen, carpets, curtains, redecoration, etc.

There is a large entrance porch / sitting area,  looking onto lake. The main  reception rooms include a living area, dining room and a games room (slate bed snooker table and dartboard, digital TV ) - all also looking onto Lake.  The main rooms have hardwood parquet floors.  The kitchen is fully fitted with all mod cons - including dishwasher microwave, fridge freezer.  There is an outside utility room with a washer / dryer machine.  Electric storage heating is supplemented by individual electric convector heaters.

Accommodation
Bed 1 has 2 double beds and built in wardrobes.
Bed 2 has 1 double bed,  a single bed and built in wardrobes.
Bed 3 has 2 single beds   The bathrooms have electric pumped showers.

The house is on circa 1/2 acre, and has full access to lakefront with good safe swimming area. It is at the end of a laneway with no passing traffic. There is also a rowing boat  available at the house upon request.

Points to note:-  There is a gate to a farmers field which is part of the access and this MUST be kept closed at all times as there may be cattle in the field. House includes a private pier - a rowing boat is available . Water to the house  is fine for cooking, boiling for tea etc etc - however bottled drinking water for drinking can be bought locally.   A car  is essential as there is no passing public traffic.

This account of  the vicinity of Ballycurrin was written by Sir William Wilde, Oscar Wilde's father, whose house, Moytura, was just along the shore

This old tower-house, or defensive mansion, consists of a quadrangular ivy-mantled keep--now somewhat altered for modern purposes--sixty-four feet long on the south, thirty-nine on the west face, and forty-seven feet high; but possessing no architectural memorial by which to assign even a probable date to it; as the dressed stones are not chiselled, but punched, or what is styled "sparrowpicked"; massive defence and security having evidently been the main objects of its founders. Both it and the newer residence are most pleasingly situated on a green slope, rising from a sheltered little bay, and surrounded by a large park of well-grown timber. There is no reference to this ancient building in our histories or inquisitions; and the only legend attaching there to is, that it was built in the "ould times" by one of three brothers, the two others of whom erected those of Ballynahinsey and Moceara (possibly Mac Ceara), with which it forms a triangle. After the Milesian invasion, our bardic histories say that one of that race, named "Caicer, erected a castle at Dún Inn, in the West of Ireland." Upon the shore adjoining Ballycurrin there exists a mound, or earthen tumulus of that name, and mentioned in Keating's History of Ireland. There is, however, no mortared structure in Ireland older than the Christian Era. And he is also of opinion that Ceara, one of the artificers said to have come over at that time left his name to many localities in Connacht--such as Loch Ceara, Caiseal Ceara; and in this immediate neighbourhood, Tobar Ceara and Gáirrín Ceara, or Ceara's well and garden. In the old quit rent receipts Ballycurrin is called Ballycar, possibly a corruption or anglicized version of Baile Ceara. In the vicinity was found the collection of amber beads, and several bronze antiquities, now in the collection of the Royal Irish Academy.
