Further details: Ballindoon House is a Palladian Villa built in 1842, situated at the mouth of a glacial valley in 100 acres of mixed woodland and pasture overlooking a five mile lake, Lough Arrow. With 1.5 miles of private shore, the lake is renowned for its clear water, excellent trout fishing and its collection of water fowl and colonies of European otters. The drive is a mile long and runs through 50 acres of mixed woodland which has been a wildlife preserve for several decades. It is home to a large collection of mammals, rare butterflies and birds, including colonies of migratory birds and swallows, which nest in the 16th Century farmyard. The estate also includes a walled garden, a tennis court and a period boathouse with boat. There are numerous walks and picnic spots where one can enjoy the peace, quiet and unspoiled beauty of the surrounding countryside. The gardens are constantly being developed and expanded and add to the relaxed country atmosphere. There is a supermarket 2 miles from the front gates.  Despite its amazingingly imposing exterior Ballindoon is very much a comfortable family home.  As with similar ancestral seats in the Southern States of  America, or in Britain, it has never really been done by a decorator;   rather it has grown organically.  A vintage classic, not a flashy production!   "World of Interiors" and National Trust people love its slightly faded grandeur.  But it is not a place to find state of the art fitted kitchens and bathrooms.
